Franz Xaver Remling (born July 10, 1803 in Edenkoben , † June 28, 1873 in Speyer ) was a Catholic priest , episcopal clergyman , cathedral capitular of the diocese of Speyer and historian .

Life

Franz Xaver Remling was born in Edenkoben as the son of the elementary school teacher Sebastian Remling and his wife Maria Margaretha geb. Young and from 1819 attended the episcopal high school in Mainz , which he graduated from high school in 1823. This was followed by studies of theology in Mainz under Bruno Franz Leopold Liebermann and in Aschaffenburg , where he a. a. was taught by Ignaz von Döllinger , with whom he had a lasting friendship. Remling received in the March 10, 1827 Wuerzburg the priesthood . In the same month the new priest came to Landau as a chaplain , but on August 7th of the current year the Speyer Bishop Johann Martin Manl appointed him as cathedral vicar and his secretary.

In 1833 Remling became pastor of Hambach , where he remained in this position until 1852. In addition, he was district school inspector and since 1846 also belonged to the district administrator of the Palatinate . After the death of the cathedral chapter Bruno Würschmitt he was elected by the Speyer cathedral chapter on January 20, 1852, as its successor in the 8th canonical.

At that time he had already made a name for himself as a historian and expert on local church history through various publications. Bishop Nikolaus von Weis officially appointed the new cathedral chapter to be the historian of the Diocese of Speyer and expressed this in his document as follows: “Since you have worked in your past pastoral work with tireless diligence and very much, regardless of the many work associated with this office in a large parish have devoted themselves to research on the bishops of Speyer to commendable success, and it is incumbent on us to ensure that the events of our time that affect our diocese are carefully and faithfully recorded for posterity too, so we entrust you with the important office of historian of the Diocese of Speyer. ” Franz Xaver Remling worked in this function until his death.

Franz Xaver Remling was buried in the old cemetery (now Adenauerpark) in Speyer. His tombstone is now on the local cathedral chapter cemetery near St. Bernhard .

Honors

Work and fame

Franz Xaver Remling, along with Michael Frey (1788–1854) and Johann Georg Lehmann (1797–1876), is considered to be the most important Palatinate historian of his time. His extensive works on the history of the Palatinate Church in particular are indispensable as source works to this day. Of this, the two-volume history of the Bishops of Speyer (1852–1854) should be emphasized as the main work, which is in no way inferior to the Modern History of the Bishops of Speyer, including the document book (1867). The profane historical book Die Rheinpfalz in the revolutionary period from 1792 to 1798 (2 volumes, 1865–1866) is also important.
