Oberliga Südwest 1988/89
2nd Bundesliga 1989/90

The Oberliga Südwest 1989/90 was the twelfth season of the third-class league.

The 1. FSV Mainz 05 , relegated from the 2. Bundesliga in the previous year , became champions and qualified for the promotion round to the 2. Bundesliga , in which they secured promotion in the south group in a tough fight as group first. Since then, the Mainz team has been playing paid football without a break. FSV Salmrohr took part in the German amateur championship final, beating Rheydter SV 2-0 in the final and becoming German amateur champion. Due to the Mainz team's promotion to the second division, only two clubs were relegated to the association leagues this season, SV Leiwen and SC Birkenfeld . However, FSG Schiffweiler, which was in 16th place in the table, had to wait over three weeks after the last game day on May 12, 1989, until June 6, 1989, when the Mainz team was promoted. For both clubs it was the last league season so far (as of 2017). In return, Saar 05 Saarbrücken (Saar) , SC Hauenstein (southwest) and Sportfreunde Eisbachtal (Rhineland) rose as the respective association league champions for the following season. The season was marked by two outstanding teams, the champions from Mainz and the pursuers from Salmrohr. Both teams suffered only one loss of the season and fought head-to-head for a long time. The Mainz team remained undefeated until the penultimate matchday and were promoted. The last game in Salmrohr was then promptly lost 2-0.
