Career
Michael Schuhmacher came to 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the Bundesliga in 1978 via Alemannia Maudach and Ludwigshafener SC . On February 17, 1979 against Hertha BSC he made his debut in the top German division. In his first two seasons at FCK he was used a total of 23 times and then loaned to Borussia Mönchengladbach for the 1980/81 season. After returning to Betzenberg, he only played twice in the first half of the 1981/82 season , so that he moved to Bayer 05 Uerdingen in the 2nd Bundesliga during the winter break . Here he fought for a regular place and stood with the club at the end of the 1982/83 season on the relegation place three. Uerdingen prevailed against first division club FC Schalke 04 and Schuhmacher contributed a goal in the second leg (1: 1). The player stayed in the second division by going to SG Wattenscheid 09 . With Wattenscheid he mostly played in the lower half of the table and left the club after one season.
The first division club 1. FSV Mainz 05 was his next stop. Schuhmacher won the Southwest Cup with Mainz in 1984 and was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga in 1988 and 1990. After the second rise, the Rheinhessen could hold in the second division. Michael Schuhmacher, who was always part of the permanent staff in Mainz, said goodbye in 1993 after nine years and let his career come to an end with the association league team SpVgg Ingelheim. For FSV he played a total of 446 games (59 goals), including 302 league games (20 goals).
