The history of the Cramer brewing family begins in 1753. It was then that the farmer Antonius Cramer was levied a tax of one Reichstaler and 19 guilders on the beer he brewed and sold. Son Johannes Vitus Cramer took over the house brewery. Thanks to the central location of the residential building in Warstein , beer serving flourished. In December 1802 large parts of the town of Warstein were destroyed by fire. Cramer's house was also affected.

In 1803 Johannes Vitus rebuilt the company's headquarters at the old location. The building was expanded into a guest and accommodation business with a home brewery. Since the St. Pankratius Church was built in the immediate vicinity, one was now in the center of the village. The original building, called the Domschänke, still stands in the historic center of the city today. In 1804 he handed over the management of the business to his eldest son Casper.

In 1823 Albert and August took over the management of the brewery. At the brewery school in Worms they learned the latest knowledge of brewing technology.

The real upswing began in 1884 with the connection of Warstein to the railroad . This made it possible to ship the beer beyond the narrower local framework. A modernization and expansion of the company took place through the commissioning of a first steam engine in 1895 and the entry in the company register in 1898. By 1920 the brewery had developed into a modern company for the time, which in addition to the production of pils and bock beer also bottled lemonades and table water.

With the development of the Kaiserquelle , discovered by Albert Cramer in Kaisersiepen in 1927, the concentration on the production of Pils began in 1928 . The water quality, with a water hardness of only one to two degrees, was ideal for beer production.

With a brewing capacity of over 100,000 hectoliters per year, Warsteiner was one of the major German breweries in 1960. The demand for premium pils rose steadily. The capacity limits in the brewery in the city center were soon reached. A new building began in 1974 on the southern outskirts of Warstein. In 1976, the Waldpark Brewery was opened "as the most modern and largest brewery in Europe" by Albert Cramer.

With over two million hectoliters, Warsteiner was Germany's largest beer brand in 1984. In 1994 the high point in the company's history was reached with an output of more than six million hectoliters. In 2008 the Waldpark brewery , which at that time was geared towards an output of seven million hectoliters, was not even half full. After a decline in production, the output of the entire Warsteiner Group in 2010 was 5.4 million hectoliters.

The year 1994 also represented a turning point in the company's history. Rumors surfaced in Hamburg gastronomy circles that the Warsteiner brewery should be connected to the Scientology sect. These rumors spread throughout Germany in the following years, even though the brewery tried to defend itself against this campaign with full-page advertisements in all major German daily newspapers and news magazines in the autumn of 1994 and again in 1997. As a result, the brewery suffered a significant drop in sales from 1995 to the turn of the millennium. Warsteiner experienced a rehabilitation through a broadcast of the media magazine Zapp , which was broadcast on February 17, 2010 on NDR . In it, the magazine took up the launch of the rumors about Warsteiner as an example of a campaign under the title “Perfidious Public Relations hidden from ambush”. In 2006, Catharina Cramer, Albert Cramer's youngest daughter, became the first woman in the company's management to take on responsibility. She runs the company together with Peter Himmelsbach and Martin Hötzel.

The little innovative market strategy in recent years has led to a decline in production and sales. The company responded with a pronounced austerity course. Employees have been laid off, production facilities have been closed and sponsorship has been restricted. After several years of market-related declines in sales, Warsteiner returned to a slight growth path in 2010. The total beverage output of the Warsteiner Group in 2012 was 4.56 million hectoliters, at the level of 2011. The consolidated turnover of the Warsteiner Group in the 2012 financial year was 530 million euros, an increase of 1.6 percent compared to the previous year. Warsteiner gave no information about the profit. Both in Germany and abroad, the Warsteiner brand achieved an increase in sales in 2013 compared to the previous year - a total of 1.2 percent, with sales falling from 530 million euros to 519 million euros. The Warsteiner Group's total beverage output in 2013 was 4.56 million hectoliters, the same as last year.

Albert Cramer, owner of the Warsteiner Brewery, died on November 20, 2012 at the age of 69.

In Warstein there was an outbreak of legionnaires on August 10, 2013 . On September 11th, the brewery announced in a press release that legionella had also been found in the wastewater pre-treatment basins of the company's sewage treatment plant and in a cooling system. The measures adopted and implemented were to cover the company's own clarifier, UV disinfection of the drain and continuous disinfection of the recooling plants.

Before the Environment Committee of the Landtag in Dusseldorf the provincial environment minister gave Johannes Remmel on February 11, 2014 announced that in January 2014, the Warsteiner brewery very high concentrations were measured by Legionella in the aeration tank of the WWTP. Several million so-called colony-forming units (CFU) of legionella were found per 100 milliliters of water. There is a legionella limit value of 100 cfu for drinking water. According to estimates by the Ruhr Association , the planned renovation and permanent protection of the Legionella-contaminated facilities in Warstein will cost around seven million euros. The company's sewage treatment plant from Warsteiner, the sewage system (brewery canal), which connects the company sewage treatment plant from Warsteiner with the communal sewage treatment plant, and the communal sewage treatment plant are to be renovated. The planned renovation of the brewery canal alone would cost 1.8 million euros and the Ruhrverband's sewage treatment plant would cost 5.5 million euros. The brewery duct is to be provided with pressure-tight sealed inspection shafts so that no more pathogens can get into the air. In the brewery's sewage treatment plant, the biological primary treatment is to be dispensed with in future and only to function as a waste water collecting basin. It was still unclear how the legionella can be removed from a bioreactor, here the aeration basin of the brewery sewage treatment plant, since a complete decommissioning and disinfection of the operational sewage treatment plant, sewerage and communal sewage treatment plant is not possible. In the rivers Wäster and Möhne , into which the water from the municipal sewage treatment plant is discharged, the water abstraction ban in force since September 2013 still applied, although the concentrations of Legionella in these rivers were harmless. In February 2014, it was still unclear where exactly Legionella had their first breeding ground.

On September 27, 2013, the WDR broadcast the program From village beer to global brand - The Cramers from Warstein in the series Dynastien in NRW .

In January 2014 the Federal Cartel Office imposed fines totaling 106.5 million euros on the Warsteiner brewery and three other breweries for fixing prices for draft and bottled beers in a beer cartel from 2006 to 2008.

The enterprise

The “Warsteiner” brand belongs to Haus Cramer Management GmbH , along with other brands . The brewery is very important to the city of Warstein and the entire region, is a major employer in the region and made Warstein known throughout Germany. The company shapes the cultural life in Warstein to a large extent. Since autumn 2009, the Warsteiner Brewery has been operating its own block-type thermal power station to supply the Waldpark Brewery with its own heat and electricity. In February 2012, TÜV NORD certified the Warsteiner brewery's energy management system. The Sauerland company reduces greenhouse gas emissions through certification and at the same time reduces future costs for its own company.

Warsteiner Group

Holdings and subsidiaries

international Developement

Warsteiner's international business was an important pillar of the brewery. With C. A. S. A. Isenbeck, the brewery had its own subsidiary in Argentina until November 23, 2010. SABMiller has bought the Argentine brewery from the Warsteiner Group, but a long-term license agreement ensures production and sales of the brand in Argentina. The wine business operated by Warsteiner in Argentina was initially excluded from the entire transaction. In 2011, Warsteiner withdrew completely from operations in Argentina with the sale of the wine business. Furthermore, cooperations with partner breweries in Africa are maintained and contracts for licensed productions are maintained, for example in Russia. In total, the brewery exports the Warsteiner brand to more than 60 countries around the world.

As of December 31, 2017, the Barth-Haas-Group lists Warsteiner in 38th place of the 40 largest brewery groups in the world.

Visitor center

“Warsteiner Welt” visitor center

Since May 15, 2006, the Warsteiner Brewery has had a visitor center called "Warsteiner World".

The Warsteiner Welt consists of a total of three buildings with a total area of 2200 square meters. In the new buildings, care was taken to ensure that the facades match the typical Sauerland architecture. The facade of the hall is adorned with a copper brew kettle which also serves as the entrance to the “Welcome Center”. The area of the visitor center measures around 53,000 square meters. The beer garden is planted with horse chestnuts and extends into a 14,000 square meter area with native trees, bushes and ground cover.

In the so-called “Warsteiner World”, history about the Warsteiner brewery and the process of brewing beer is explained during an approximately one and a half hour presentation. The tour begins with a performance in the “Rotarium” multimedia theater. The viewer moves towards the individual stage sets on the 360-degree screen on electronically controlled rotating platforms. The comments on the individual stations are offered in several languages. At the end of the tour, the visitor arrives again in the welcome hall of the visitor center, in which there are exhibits on the products of the private brewery and the entrance to an indoor beer garden with 150 seats.
