The König Ludwig GmbH & Co. KG Schloßbrauerei Kaltenberg (short: König Ludwig Brewery ) with headquarters in Fürstenfeldbruck in Upper Bavaria is a medium-sized Bavarian brewery . The brewery emerged from the Kaltenberg Castle Brewery . Since 2001 the König Ludwig Schloßbrauerei Kaltenberg has been a 50/50 joint venture between the entrepreneur Luitpold Prince of Bavaria and the Warsteiner Brewery . The König Ludwig Schloßbrauerei Kaltenberg is a licensee of König Ludwig International GmbH & Co. KG , which is controlled by Luitpold Prince of Bavaria. The beverage brands "König Ludwig Dunkel", "König Ludwig Weissbier", "König Ludwig Hell" and "Kaltenberg" are owned by the licensor, König Ludwig International . It carries these brands worldwide and has licensed third parties in many countries. In 2004 340,000 hl were brewed, of which 100,000 hl in Kaltenberg.

Naming

The name and the official slogan "Beer of Royal Highness" comes from the fact that the brewery, which is primarily known for its brands König Ludwig Dunkel and König Ludwig Weissbier , goes back to the Bavarian royal family and for a long time still a Wittelsbacher , Luitpold Prince von Bayern , who owns the management. Today the management is in the hands of two salaried managing directors. Luitpold Prince of Bavaria continues to be the managing director of König Ludwig International.

Locations

The original location is Kaltenberg Castle , where brewing is still done today. In 1980 the Marthabräu in Fürstenfeldbruck was taken over, since then the administration and a large part of the production are located there. Other locations are the Oberbräu in Holzkirchen and the Thannhausen brewery .

History of the brewery

Kaltenberg Castle

prehistory

Already in 1260 the House of Wittelsbach founded the first brewery, a little later (in 1292) was built Duke Rudolph the Kaltenberg Castle . It is believed that beer has been brewed here since then. After a long and eventful history, it did not come back into the possession of the Wittelsbachers until 1955, who had previously shaped the Bavarian art of brewing through the Bavarian Purity Law and the wheat beer monopoly that had lasted for over 200 years . Since then, the old Bavarian royal coat of arms has adorned the bottle caps (the Bavarian state brewery Weihenstephan in Freising uses the similar, old Bavarian state coat of arms from 1923 ).

History of the Kaltenberg Castle Brewery

The castle brewery in its current form was opened in 1871 and joined the Munich Union Brewery (today Löwenbräu ) in 1920 . The Wittelsbach family has owned the brewery again since 1955, and in 1976 Luitpold Prince of Bavaria took over the castle and brewery. As managing director, he relied on the niche strategy . The brewery specialized in dark beer . Since then, the level of awareness of the beers (especially due to the Kaltenberg knight tournament, which has been taking place since 1979 ) and production has increased significantly. In 1980 the Marthabräu in Fürstenfeldbruck was taken over. In 2003, a close cooperation was entered into with the Thannhausen Post Brewery. The post brewery remained an independent family business. Since then, other breweries have been taken over, such as the Holzkirchner Oberbräu in 2007. Through licensing, beers are brewed and sold worldwide under the Kaltenberg name.

King Ludwig under license

Beers under the brand name "Kaltenberg" are represented in the following countries through licensing by König Ludwig International:

Kaltenberg and the Oktoberfest

A legal dispute has been going on since the 1980s about the possible participation of the castle brewery in Munich's Oktoberfest . Only Munich companies are allowed to attend the festival, so the Wittelsbach brewery is not allowed to participate, although the festival was brought to life by the Wittelsbach family on the occasion of the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig (I) .

Luitpold Prince of Bavaria suspects a cartel of large breweries (which are now mostly under foreign control) behind this regulation and, when he wishes to participate, invokes royal tradition (even beer from Vienna was served at the first festival ) and the support of the population (he reckons suggested that opening the Oktoberfest to breweries from the surrounding area would drastically lower the price of beer at the Oktoberfest). So far, his application has been rejected every year by the responsible organizing committee.

Numerous protest actions have so far not helped: an “alternative brewery move-in” organized by him earned him a warning for obstructing traffic. When he tried to circumvent the exclusion by setting up a "mobile brewery", the statutes were changed.

KLD-Asso99

An exclusive advertising medium for the brewery was the König Ludwig Dunkel ( BYC ) from Luitpold Prinz von Bayern , an Asso99 , which was used as a regatta yacht in sailing. The ship with its dark brown hull crashed against a rock on Lake Garda .
