The 1989/90 season of the Oberliga was the 16th season of the Oberliga as the third highest division in football in Germany after the introduction of the two-track - later single-track - 2nd Bundesliga for the 1974/75 season.

Promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga
In the two rounds of promotion, VfB Oldenburg and 1. FSV Mainz 05 were promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga as group winners, while TSV Havelse and 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 were second in their group .
