The 1977/78 season of the Oberliga was the fourth season of the Oberliga as the third-highest division in football in Germany after the introduction of the two-track - later single-track - 2nd Bundesliga for the 1974/75 season.

In addition to two direct promoters, SC Viktoria Köln , Wacker 04 Berlin , Borussia Neunkirchen and SC Freiburg were group winners and DSC Wanne-Eickel and Holstein Kiel were second in their group in four rounds of promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga .
