The 1986/87 season of the Oberliga was the 13th season of the Oberliga as the third highest division in football in Germany after the introduction of the two-track - later single-track - 2nd Bundesliga for the 1974/75 season.

Promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga

In the two rounds of promotion, BVL 08 Remscheid and Kickers Offenbach were group winners, while SV Meppen and SpVgg Bayreuth were promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga as runners-up .
