The 1985/86 season of the Oberliga was the twelfth season of the Oberliga as the third highest division in football in Germany after the introduction of the two-track - later single-track - 2nd Bundesliga for the 1974/75 season.

Promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga
In the two rounds of promotion, FC St. Pauli and SSV Ulm 1846 were promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga as group winners, while Rot-Weiss Essen and FSV Salmrohr were both runners-up in the group .
