Oehrlein started with club football at VfB Bodenheim (Rheinhessen) and moved to the youth department of FSV Mainz 05 in 1973 . In the 1975/76 season he played for the first time in the first team, the first competitive game he played a season later. 1977/78 the striker's first ten league goals followed and Oehrlein qualified with his club for the new Oberliga Südwest . After a third place in the league, Alfred Oehrlein left the FSV and went to the second division club Wormatia Worms . In Worms he played for three years and after the club's relegation from the second division to SV Wiesbaden , which had just been promoted to the Oberliga Hessen . After a season in Wiesbaden, Oehrlein was active for Hassia Bingen (Oberliga Südwest) for two years and finally played for another two years for Wormatia Worms, where he could not match previous goal quotas. However, in 1986 he won the title of Southwest Champion with Worms. The club did not participate in the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga. In 1987 Oehrlein ended his career.
