German amateur soccer champion in 1988 was Eintracht Trier . In the final at the Oldenburger Stadion Donnerschwee on June 19, 1988, they won 5-4 on penalties against VfB Oldenburg after it had been0-0after extra time .

Participating teams

The champions of the eight Oberliga seasons as well as the second of the Oberliga Nord from the 1987/88 season played the four promoted teams for the 2nd Bundesliga in a promotion round . Seven runners-up and the third from Oberliga Nord took part in the competition for the German amateur championship.
