German amateur football champions in 1996 became the SSV Ulm 1846 . In the final in the Ulm Danube Stadium on June 15, 1996, the hosts won 2-1 against VfR Mannheim . With just 500 spectators, the final was the worst-attended final in the history of the competition. With Günther Habermann from Weißensee in Thuringia, a referee from the area of the former DFV of the GDR led a final of the amateur championship for the only time. For the FIFA referee, it was also the last game of his career as a referee, which he had to end after reaching the age limit.
