The residents belonged to the rural upper class in the Hattingen and Sprockhövel area. A mill is occupied in the courtyard , the mill pond is still preserved today. The owner family Varrentrapp / Fahrentrappe has a coat of arms in which a bustard is depicted. The interpretation of the place name in connection with the bird species may have arisen later, however, Leithäuser sees in the old documented place name and water name Farntrapa a form of the Germanic -apa (= water , brook ), as it is often found in the region.

Driving Trappe belonged to the late Middle Ages and early modern period to the peasantry Elffrinckhuysen in office Blankenstein of the County of Mark .

In the early modern period, hard coal was mined in the vicinity of the Herzkämper Mulde. The 1.8 kilometer long Kreßsieper Erbstollen, which ended at Fahrentrappe and drained into the Felderbach, was created from 1745 to drain the mining area. It was replaced by the lower lying, 3.8 km long Herzkämper Erbstollen, which was created from 1784 and has a light hole at Fahrentrappe.

The municipality encyclopedia for the province of Westphalia from 1887 gives a number of 33 inhabitants for Vahrentrappe who lived in four houses. It belonged at that time to the rural community of Upper Elfring Hausen Office Hattingen the circle Hattingen .
