geography

Niederelfringhausen is located south of the core town of Hattingen and east of Langenberg on the L 924 state road (Felderbachstraße) in the border area between Westphalia and the Bergisches Land . The Oberelfringhausen district is south of the village ; the Felderbach flows through both places. The highest point is the Immelberg with a height of 277 m. The landscape is called Hattinger Hügelland or Elfringhauser Switzerland . In Niederelfringhausen there is the Niederbredenscheid / Elfringhausen nature reserve and the Felderbachtal nature reserve .

history

The area was first mentioned in a document on October 17, 837, when Erp, son of Aldrik , gave the Werden abbey between Podrebeci (Porbecke) and Farnthrapa (Felderbach) a clearing in the Waneswald . In 1005 there were the Huxel and Haselbeck farms in Niederelfringhausen, which were subject to tax .

The place Elfrinchusen is mentioned by name for the first time in 1253. According to the treasury of Grafschaft Mark from 1486, the Elfringhausen peasantry belonged to the Blankenstein , Gogericht and Hattingen parishes and had 24 taxable farm owners, with taxes between half and five gold gulden . The following farms are mentioned in Niederelfringhausen: "four Huxel farms, Rischen Hof, Obere Blume, Böhnkes Hof, Haselbeck, Niederlaak, Oberlaak and two Bemberg farms".

After the dissolution of the county of Mark , Nieder- and Oberelfringhausen belonged to the Sprockhövel Office (1815 Prussia , Province of Westphalia ) until 1824 , and from 1825 to the Hattingen-Land Office as independent communities of Nieder- and Oberelfringhausen. In 1858 Niederelfringhausen had 417 inhabitants, but because of the poor living and working conditions, more and more families later left their traditional home and moved to surrounding communities.

In Niederelfringhausen, which is characterized by agriculture, cattle and forestry, there were also iron cottages, where nails and other small iron parts were forged in homework. House ribbon weavers were first mentioned in a document in 1822 and many residents ( Kötter ) made their living from ribbon weaving . While the knitters in Oberelfringhausen processed cotton and linen, those from Niederelfringhausen mainly woven silk.

Religion, school

Most of the residents are Lutheran and have been parish in Hattingen since the Middle Ages. It was not until 1899 that a parish vicar was employed for both Elfringhausen. The common cemetery has existed in Oberelfringhausen since 1900. There is also the Elfringhausen Evangelical Chapel, built in 1964. The evangelical elementary school common to both places is said to have existed before 1700. Since 1908 as a public association elementary school until its dissolution in 1968.

Districts, clubs

There was a common community center for both places in Oberelfringhausen. At the end of 1969 Niederelfringhausen had 273 inhabitants with the community leader Günter Schwardtmann (1964–1969). As part of the municipal reorganization, Niederelfringhausen was incorporated into the city of Hattingen on January 1, 1970. The Elfringhausen Volunteer Fire Brigade has existed for both places since 1944. The SSV Preussen sports club was founded in 1953 (table tennis national league) and in 1967 the "Citizens, Home and Transport Association Elfringhausen eV".
