Julius Leithäuser

Karl Julius Leithäuser (born April 11, 1861 in Barmen , today Wuppertal , † June 10, 1945 in Bad Godesberg ) was a German philologist , writer , name researcher and dialectologist.

Life

Leithäuser was born on April 11, 1861 in Barmen , today a district of Wuppertal , in poor circumstances. After attending the secondary school in Barmen, he began to study philology in Halle (Saale) in 1881 , after which he worked as an assistant teacher in his native town of Barmen from 1885. In 1887 he switched to teaching at the Barmer Realgymnasium .

His first publication on the subject of Gallicisms in Lower Rhine dialects appeared as early as 1891 . After his marriage to Elise Wirminghaus in 1891, he published numerous works on the Bergisch toponymy , on the history of the Wuppertal and also on the history of his secondary school. His works about and in Bergisch dialects, most of which he published under the pseudonym JL Gemarker , received widespread attention .

In 1923 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Cologne . In 1925 he was made an honorary member of the Bergisches Geschichtsverein . In the same year he quit school due to a chronic respiratory illness and taught the subject "Bergische Mundart" until 1937. His wife died in 1937.

During the air raid on Barmen in 1943, he and his house lost all of his documents. On September 11th of the same year he moved to Bad Godesberg, where he died at the age of 84.
