Veikkausliiga 1995

The 1996 Veikkausliiga was the seventh season of the Finnish top division in men's football under that name and the 66th season since its inception in 1930.

mode

The league started with twelve teams and thus with two fewer than before. Since the Veikkausliiga should start in 1997 with ten teams, the last three teams were relegated in 1996, the fourth from last team had to face the relegation.

In 1996 a main round was held in which each team had to compete twice against the other teams. The best six teams in the main round qualified for the championship round, in which the teams competed against each other once again. The points and results from the main round were included in the evaluation. The teams that found themselves in the ranks seven to twelve took part in the relegation round, in which five more games were to be played and the results were added to the points from the main round.

Season course

The main round was extremely exciting and after 22 match days there were just four points between the main round champion FF Jaro from Jakobstad and the sixth Myllykosken Pallo -47 . After the five games within the championship round, the main round runner-up FC Jazz Pori won the title. FF Jaro even slipped to fifth place while Myllykoski improved from sixth to second place.

The relegation round, however, brought hardly any changes: Tampereen Ilves , defending champions Haka Valkeakoski and Mikkelin Palloilijat remained in the last three places. Rovaniemi PS was able to move up one rank and displaced HJK Helsinki to the relegation place. HJK then narrowly prevailed in the relegation against Hangö IK .
