The Mestaruussarja 1971 was the 41st season of the Finnish football championship since its introduction in 1930. It was played from April 25 to September 26. Turku PS became champion before Helsingfors IFK .

The league was increased to 14 teams for this season. The last three clubs were relegated directly. The fourth from bottom played with the three group winners of the II divisioona two places for the 1972 season, in which twelve teams played again.

The three group winners of the II divisioona, as well as Tampereen Pallo-Veikot as eleventh of the Mestaruussarja determined two starting positions for the 1972 season . The game was played from October 3 to 24, 1971.

The final of the Finnish Football Cup took place on October 10, 1971 in the Helsinki Olympic Stadium. Mikkelin Palloilijat won 4-1 against Vaasan Sport .
