The Mestaruussarja 1979 was the 49th season of the Finnish football championship since its introduction in 1930. It was played among twelve teams in a combined system of a main round with a round trip and a subsequent championship or relegation round. Master was Oulun Palloseura before Kuopion PS .

    Relegation round

    The four worst teams from Mestaruussarja and the four best teams from I divisioona (marked with *) took part in the relegation round. The teams received additional points for their placements in previous competitions. The ninth to twelfth-placed teams in the Mestaruussarja main round received four, three, two and an additional point. The same ranking applied to the four best second division teams (1st place = 4 points, 2nd place = 3 points, etc.).
