The Mestaruussarja 1981 was the 51st season of the Finnish football championship since its introduction in 1930. It was played among twelve teams in a combined system of a main round with a round trip and a subsequent championship or relegation round. Champion was HJK Helsinki ahead of Kuopion Pallotoverit .

Championship round
The first eight teams in the main round played the champions and participants for the UEFA Cup in a simple round. The results obtained from the main round were also included. However, only half of the points (rounded up if necessary) were taken.

Relegation round
The four worst teams from Mestaruussarja and the four best teams from I divisioona (marked with *) took part in the relegation round. The teams received additional points for their placements in previous competitions. The ninth to twelfth-placed teams in the Mestaruussarja main round received four, three, two and an additional point. The same ranking applied to the four best second division teams (1st place = 4 points, 2nd place = 3 points, etc.).

Soccer cup
In the final of the Finnish Football Cup in Töölön Pallokenttä in Helsinki on October 17, 1981, HJK Helsinki won 4-0 against second division team Kuusysi Lahti and thus secured the double. Kuusysi qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup.
