Veikkausliiga 1996

The 1997 Veikkausliiga was the eighth season of the Finnish top division in men's football under this name and the 67th season since its inception in 1930.

HJK Helsinki, who had only just barely held their own in relegation against relegation the year before , won the championship with a sovereign advantage of ten points over the Vaasan PS. Defending champion FC Jazz Pori was only seventh.

In the final of the Finnish Football Cup , FC Haka from Valkeakoski won 2-1 after extra time over Turku PS. Turku had already been in the final in the preseason and were narrowly inferior to HJK Helsinki on penalties. The cup final in the Helsinki Olympic Stadium on October 25th was watched by around 4,100 spectators.

HJK Helsinki won the league cup , which was played for the fourth time , with a 2-0 win over Vaasan PS in the final. HJK won this title for the third time.
