The Mestaruussarja 1956 was the 26th season of the Finnish football championship since its introduction in 1930. It was played among ten teams from May 5 to October 10.

Master became Kuopion PS . The last two clubs were relegated.

In the final of the Finnish Football Cup , two teams faced each other that did not play in the first division in 1956. Helsingin Pallo-Pojat beat Kisatoverit 2-1 in front of around 2,000 spectators in the Helsinki Olympic Stadium Tampereen Kisatoverit .
