Garbis Zakaryan

Garbis Zakaryan (born June 2, 1930 in Istanbul , Turkey ; † January 25, 2020 ; nickname Büyük Garbis , German "Great Garbis") was a Turkish boxer and the first professional boxer in Turkey.

Life

Zakaryan was of Armenian descent and studied at the local Armenian Esayan School in Istanbul. His father was unable to work because of his poor health, and his mother provided all the family support by knitting . He left school after 5th grade and started working as a newspaper seller. He began his boxing career in 1944 by participating in the Boğaziçi Turnuvası (Bosporus Tournament). He then became champions in Istanbul in 1947 and 1948 with a combat weight of 48 kg. In 1949 he represented Turkey against Spain for the first time . In 1951 he became Turkey's first professional boxer.

In 1964 he became the master of the entire Middle East. Zakaryan ended his career in 1966. He has since worked as a boxing coach, u. a. with the European champion Cemal Kamacı .
