After two third places followed in 1989 the crash to the penultimate place, the following year GÍ rose without a win in the second division and returned in 1993 for only one season. In 2002 they returned again and the team was able to hold onto mid-table. In 2004, the club took part in the championship together with B68 Toftir in a syndicate that was dissolved again after the season. In 2007 GÍ achieved the greatest success in the Cup with participation in the final, which was lost 3-0 to KÍ Klaksvík . Due to the merger with LÍF Leirvík , Víkingur Gøta took over the place from GÍ in the first division in 2008 .
