society

Knudsen began his career in 1984 with NSÍ Runavík . He made his debut on the last day of the match in a 6-1 home defeat against HB Tórshavn . the following year he was able to win his first cup with a 2-1 win against LÍF Leirvík . In the summer of 1986 he became the first Faroese player to be employed as a professional footballer abroad. He played there as a professional in Denmark with Frederikshavn fI , later in the Icelandic Landsbankadeild with Leiftur and in the Scottish Football League First Division with Ayr United . In between he kept coming back to the Faroe Islands. From 1988 to 1991 he played again for NSÍ and made promotion to the first division in 1990 , after which he moved to GÍ Gøta , for whom he was active as a regular goalkeeper until 1997 and won four championship titles in a row between 1993 and 1996. During these years he played with Henning Jarnskor , Magni Jarnskor , Sámal Joensen , Alvi Justinussen , Janus Rasmussen and John Petersen, among others . In 1996 (5: 3 in the replay against HB Tórshavn) and 1997 (6: 0 against VB Vágur ) two more cup victories followed. After brief guest appearances in Iceland and Scotland as well as further individual appearances for GÍ Gøta and B36 Tórshavn , he returned to NSÍ Runavík in 2001, where he was voted Goalkeeper of the Year at the end of the season, and was also still in goal as a manager for the club . In 2002, a 2-1 win against HB Tórshavn was followed by his fourth success in the Cup, and he was also voted goalkeeper of the year for the second time. At the age of 40 he won his last of five championship titles on October 21, 2007 alongside Jóhan T. Davidsen , Hjalgrím Elttør , Jónhard Frederiksberg , Christian Høgni Jacobsen , Bogi Løkin , Pól Thorsteinsson and Einar Tróndargjógv . In the same year Knudsen was again elected goalkeeper of the year. In the following four seasons Knudsen was still in the squad, but was only used three times. At the age of 45, he ended his active football career in 2012.

National team

From 1981 Knudsen was in goal for the Faroese youth team, from 1988 to 2006 he was a permanent goalkeeper of the men's national team . His first international game he completed on August 24, 1988 in Akranes in a 0-1 in a friendly against Iceland . This was also the Faroe Islands' first official international match as a FIFA member.

Knudsen was part of the team that defeated Austria 1-0 in 1990 . He became known far beyond the country's borders after this game, especially because he wore a white woolen hat during the game, which from then on was his "trademark".

Between 1988 and 2006 he played a total of 65 games for the Faroese national football team. He played his last international match on May 14, 2006 in a friendly against Poland in Wronki , which was lost 4-0. He stayed with the national team as a goalkeeping coach. Knudsen's successor as the first man in goal was Jákup Mikkelsen .

Coaching career

From 2006 to 2014 Knudsen acted as goalkeeping coach for the Faroese national team . In 2015 he took over the post as trainer of NSÍ Runavík II in the 1st Deild , with whom he finished eighth and fifth in the first two years. He also led the club's U18s to two championships in the same period. After the U18 cup final had been lost 3-2 to HB Tórshavn in 2015 , Knudsen won the new edition of the final one year later with 2-1. In 2017 he was solely responsible for the second team, with which he took sixth place in the 1st Deild. A year later followed the fifth place in the 1st Deild, with the U21 Knudsen finished second behind AB Argir in the final round.
