Mikkelsen started his career at KÍ Klaksvík as a goalkeeper, but was also active as a striker in his youth . In 1987 he was in the first team's squad for the first time, his first competitive game he completed the year after in the second round of the cup against SÍ Sørvágur , which was won 4: 3 away. A month later, on the sixth game day of 1. Deild, the first league game against ÍF Fuglafjørður , which was lost 2: 4. With two exceptions, Mikkelsen was also in goal in the remaining league games. In 1990 he played all league games for the first time. This season also succeeded the first cup victory with a 6-1 in the final against GÍ Gøta . The following championship in 1991 was also quite successful and KÍ Klaksvík was able to celebrate the first championship title in 19 years. In addition to Mikkelsen, the championship team included players like Todi Jónsson , Allan Mørkøre and Kurt Mørkøre . In the 1992 season he succeeded on the eleventh match day from the penalty spot against GÍ Gøta his first of a total of five goals in the first Faroese division. After further top placements in the league, the next title was won in the Cup in 1994 with a 2-1 win against B71 Sandur .

In the summer of 1994 he switched to the Superliga to Herfølge BK . Due to a special agreement, he was allowed to help out in the semi-final second legs of the Cup in 1995 and 1996 respectively at KÍ Klaksvík. Despite the fact that a draw and a victory could be achieved, the final participation was missed due to the first leg results. In his fifth year at Herfølge BK, Mikkelsen became Danish champions in the 1999/2000 season. In the team at that time he played with Steven Lustü , Jesper Falck , John Jensen and Kenneth Jensen , among others . The following year, however, was disappointing and ended with the club's relegation to the second division. The next stations were for Molde FK in the Tippeligaen and Partick Thistle , who were then playing in the Scottish Premier League . At both clubs he only played a few games.

In 2004 Mikkelsen returned to KÍ Klaksvík, in 2005 he switched to B36 Tórshavn . That year he was the first ever goalkeeper to be voted Faroese Footballer of the Year. He also received the award for the best goalkeeper. At that time he was Faroese champion with his club at the side of Fróði Benjaminsen , Allan Mørkøre, Mikkjal Thomassen and Pól Thorsteinsson . In 12 of 27 games he was able to keep the goal clean and conceded a total of only 17 goals. His saves against Thierry Henry in World Cup qualification were also honored. In the following year, the Faroese Cup could also be won with a 2-1 against his old club KÍ Klaksvík and the Atlantic Cup on penalties against the Icelandic champions FH Hafnarfjörður . In 2007 he won the Faroese Supercup against the reigning Faroese champions HB Tórshavn, also on penalties. In 2008 Mikkelsen returned to KÍ Klaksvík again and in 2009 temporarily acted as player- coach , but could not prevent the club's first relegation to the second division. Nevertheless, he won the award for Goalkeeper of the Year for KÍ again in both years. From 2010 he played for ÍF Fuglafjørður in the first division and was voted goalkeeper of the year for the fourth time in 2012. After the 2014 season, he ended his career. On the 23rd matchday in 2016 and on the 13th matchday in 2017, he returned for one game each. After another assignment for KÍ Klaksvík III in the 2nd Deild , Mikkelsen completed five games in 2019 for the second team of KÍ, which became champions in the 1st Deild.

National team

Mikkelsen was Jens Martin Knudsen's successor in the national team for the goalkeeping position. He made his debut on July 2, 1995 against Iceland . The friendly game in Neskaupstaður was lost 2-0. In the first 48 international matches, he conceded 107 goals (as of June 1, 2007). His national team career seemed to be over in 2009, but due to the injury to his successor Gunnar Nielsen , Mikkelsen was again between the posts in 2010 at two international matches. Also in 2011 Mikkelsen was appointed to the squad due to Nielsen's renewed injury. With his appearance on August 15, 2012 in the friendly against Iceland and at the age of 42 years and one day, Mikkelsen became the oldest goalkeeper who was used in an international match recognized by FIFA . This 2-0 defeat in Reykjavík was also the last of his 73 international matches. This puts him in third place behind Fróði Benjaminsen and Óli Johannesen .

Coaching career

In 2009, Mikkelsen was from the first to the 21st match day player- coach of KÍ Klaksvík alongside Aleksandar Đorđević, they were replaced by Petur Mohr, the relegation could not be prevented. In 2015 he took over the position of goalkeeping coach of the Faroese national team from Jens Martin Knudsen . In 2015, he was the coach of ÍF Fuglafjørður for the last four match days , who finished sixth at the end of the season. He replaced Aleksandar Jovević here. From the eighth day of the game in 2016 he took over the position at ÍF from Jógvan Martin Olsen , and from the tenth day of the year he was on the line with Símun Eliasen until the end of the season. It was again taken sixth place. After the 17th matchday of the 2017 season, Mikkelsen was dismissed from last place.
