SÍ Sørvágur

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

SÍ Sørvágur , full name Sørvágs Ítróttarfelag (" Sørvágur Sports Club "), SÍ for short , is a Faroese sports club based in Sørvágur on the island of Vágar .

history

The club was founded on March 17, 1905 as Sørvágs Bóltfelag ("Ball Club of Sørvágur"). It is known from oral sources that these five men from Sørvágur were the founding fathers:

  • Heini Joensen, or Heini í Nýggjustovu (1876–1968)
  • Joen Rasmussen, or Løðu Jógvan (1876–1957)
  • Olav Olsen, or Ólavur í Ólavsstovu (1868–1949)
  • Hans Ole-Jacobsen, or Bíggjar-Hans (1865–1944)
  • Ole Emarius Olsen, called Jens-Ólavur (1880–1964)

Soon the club got its current name Sørvágs Ítróttarfelag , generally abbreviated to . The reason for this was that in addition to football , other sports, namely swimming and handball , became popular in Sørvágur and these sports fans also wanted to join the club. While the interest in swimming soon fell asleep, the handball department lasted until the 1960s. The volleyball section was created at the end of the 1970s .

The Sørvágur football field

As with other Faroese clubs, there was initially no proper football field. That is why Dungasandur was played on the beach . The first soccer field was not put into operation until April 19, 1954. In 1979 the square was completely renovated and got its current shape. It was inaugurated on March 15, 1980 on the occasion of the 75th anniversary. In 1991 the course was equipped with artificial turf. On the 100th anniversary, the municipality of Sørvágur donated a new artificial turf.

After the British occupation of the Faroe Islands in World War II , there were many barracks left on Vágar. This is where the first club house of the SÍ moved. The barrack was demolished in the 1950s and replaced with a dance hall. It wasn't until 1997 that the SÍ got its own club house again. Until then, first the dance hall and then the school were rented as temporary accommodation.

The greatest success was the 1947 Faroe Islands Championship. A few years later, however, the game almost came to a standstill as the men from Sørvágur sought their luck fishing off Greenland. Naturally, this was only possible in the summer months. It was only in the 60s that the club came back to life and in 1969 SÍ was the winner in the 2nd league (then Meðaldeildin ). But already in the next year the SÍ could not put together a full team. 1972-75 they were again represented in the 2nd division. 1976 Sørvágur was with two teams in the 3rd division, 1978 succeeded in promotion to the 2nd division. In 1984 the descent followed again, and in 1987 the rise.

1998 to 2003 SÍ Sørvágur was part of the FS Vágar merger . After this project broke up in 2004, the SÍ was in the 3rd division, but was immediately able to move up again to the 2nd division, which is now called 1. Deild , where they stayed until the end.

At the end of 2007 it was decided to again merge with FS Vágar, who at the time also played in the 2nd league ("1st Deild"), which officially came about on November 6, 2007. Together they now operate under the name 07 Vestur .
