Jónsson began his football career at KÍ Klaksvík . The first competitive game he completed in 1989 on the third day of the first division in the away game against GÍ Gøta . In the 3: 3 tie, he scored his first competitive goal to take the 3: 1 lead. In the following five league encounters Jónsson was also used. In 1990 he was one of the regular players from the second half of the season. In the final of the Cup against GÍ Gøta he played from the start and scored the 6-1 final score. In the third year he became Faroese champion with KÍ. Jónsson was 19 years old at the time and it was also 19 years ago that KÍ was last champion. At that time there were still players like Jákup Mikkelsen , Allan Mørkøre and Kurt Mørkøre in the championship team . In 2003 he moved to league rivals B36 Tórshavn .

After the first half of the season, Jónsson left the club again and moved to the Danish Super League for Lyngby BK . There he turned professional and scored 18 goals in 76 games from 1993 to 1997. He made his debut on matchday 29 in the away game against FC Copenhagen when he was substituted on in the 46th minute. The game was lost 3-0. He scored his first goal in the Danish league on matchday 32 in a 4-1 win against Aarhus GF , he scored to 4-0. Due to a special agreement, he was allowed to help out in the 1995 semi-final second leg of the Cup at KÍ Klaksvík. Despite the fact that it was possible to win 2-0 against B68 Toftir , the final was missed due to the first leg result.

He became really known during his time at FC Copenhagen from 1997 to 2004 with 54 goals in 167 games. During this time, FCK was three times champion and one cup winner . He was very popular with fans of the club from the start. Many refer to him as the best striker in Danish football. The first championship was celebrated in the 2000/01 season, after which the Danish Supercup was won 2-0 against the cup winners Silkeborg IF . The next championship title followed in the 2002/03 season. In the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League he was almost a popular hero with a 1-1 draw against Glasgow Rangers , but the second leg was lost 2-1. In 2003/04 FC Copenhagen celebrated the third championship in a row. With a 1-0 win against Aalborg BK in the 2004 cup final, the double was also achieved. The Supercup against the cup finalists Aalborg BK was also won 2-1. Last season was crowned with winning the Royal League , but he was not used in the final. During his time at FC Copenhagen, Jónsson was the most successful goalscorer in the club's history and the most successful foreign goalscorer in the Danish Superliga.

In the summer of 2005, Jónsson moved to start Kristiansand in the Tippeligaen . There he made his debut on matchday 14 in the away game against Lillestrøm SK when he came on for Ben Wright in the 80th minute . The game was lost 0-2. His first goal in the top Norwegian league he scored on matchday 16 in the home game against Lyn Oslo to the 1-1 final. In the first season, the runner-up was reached. At the end of 2006, Jónsson ended his collaboration with the Norwegian association in order to have more time for his family, who live in Copenhagen. In an interview with portal.fo on October 13, 2006, Jónsson stated that for family reasons it would depend on an offer from Copenhagen or the surrounding area whether he would continue to play football after the start.

Because an offer came from Copenhagen, Jónsson moved on March 20, 2007 to the Danish second division club Fremad Amager . At the same time, as one of the main investors, he became a board member of the club, which he wanted to lead into the Danish Super League until 2010. However, this undertaking failed. In the first year he was relegated to the third division, which he and his compatriots Andrew av Fløtum and Jónas Þór Næs could not prevent. After a merger with other clubs to form FC Amager , the new club went bankrupt in the 2008/09 season, and Jónsson then regretted this. Fremad Amager plays in the fourth division in 2010/11.

In 2009 he made another comeback for KÍ Klaksvík and scored a goal right away in the first division. However, this should remain the only one in a total of eight games, the first relegation of the club could not prevent Jónsson.

National team

Until 2005 Jónsson played in the national football team of the Faroe Islands . He made his debut together with Eyðfinn Davidsen on July 15, 1991 in the friendly against Turkey in Tórshavn , where he scored the opening goal at 1-1. With nine goals in 45 games, he was the top scorer in his country until November 21, 2007 (when Rógvi Jacobsen broke the record). For the last time he played on September 3, 2005 in the World Cup qualifier against France , which was lost 3-0 in Lens . Jónsson was substituted in the 67th minute when the score was 2-0 against Rógvi Jacobsen.
