The Faroese Football Championship 1991 was held in the 1st Deild called first Faroese league and was the 49th season overall. It started on April 7, 1991 and ended on October 6, 1991.

Promoted NSÍ Runavík returned after two years in the top division, SÍ Sumba was the 18th participant in this after the introduction of the league game in 1947 . Champion was KÍ Klaksvík , who could win the title for the 16th time. Defending champion HB Tórshavn finished in sixth place. However, MB Miðvágur had to relegate after two years and SÍ Sumba after one year of first class.

Compared to the previous season, the goal rate improved to 2.99 per game. HB Tórshavn scored the highest victory with an 8-2 in the home game against B36 Tórshavn on matchday nine, which was also the highest-scoring game.

mode

In the 1st Deild , each team played twice against each other on 18 match days. The team with the best points at the end of the season was the champions of this league, the last two teams were relegated to the 2nd Deild . For the first time, qualification for the European Cup , which was played in 1992/93, was possible.

Season course

Championship decision

B36 Tórshavn got off to a perfect start with seven wins from the first seven games and thus sat at the top of the table from the third matchday on. On the eighth matchday, the first defeat had to be accepted in the home game against KÍ Klaksvík 3-0. From the next five games only one victory succeeded, so on the twelfth match day after the 2: 3 home defeat against VB Vágur , the championship lead was given up to KÍ for the first time. These started with only one win from the first six games and then took seventh place, but then won six games in a row. On matchday 13, KÍ Klaksvík lost 3-2 at HB Tórshavn , while B36 Tórshavn scored at least one point in the 0-0 away game against B68 Toftir , which led to the two teams swapping places. In the following three games, two wins and one draw followed for both teams. On matchday 17, KÍ and B36 faced each other in a direct duel, which the team from Klaksvík won 3-0 in their own stadium and thus changed the lead again. The lead was only one point with a goal difference four goals better. On the decisive final day of the match, KÍ Klaksvík lost his away game at GÍ Gøta 2-1. After KÍ equalized in the 68th minute, GÍ marked the final four minutes later. Now the runner-up B36 Tórshavn absolutely had to win, but only achieved a 1-1 draw in the home game against HB Tórshavn, so both teams were tied. B36 was able to compensate for the deficit in the 59th minute four minutes later, but it was not enough for more. Due to the better goal difference, KÍ Klaksvík stayed in first place.

Relegation battle

SÍ Sumba celebrated their first win on matchday two with a 3-1 away game against HB Tórshavn. The second win, however, had to be waited a long time, this only came on the 14th matchday in a 3-2 home game against B68 Toftir. This came too late for relegation, because with the 3-1 defeat in the home game against B36 Tórshavn in the following game, relegation was certain, after the last place was consistently occupied from the seventh game day. A win would still have preserved the theoretical chance, which the direct rivals NSÍ Runavík and B68 Toftir, who were seven points away before the match day, succeeded in their home games with a 2-0 against MB Miðvágur and a 0-0 against KÍ Klaksvík and were thus able to increase the distance beyond the reach.

B68 Toftir found himself after the third matchday at the bottom of the table, which could be left on the seventh matchday with a 2-2 in the home game against GÍ Gøta. In the next game succeeded with the 1-0 in the away game against VB Vágur the first victory, until the eleventh game day, however, the team remained in the penultimate place. In six games from the eighth to the 13th matchday, B68 conceded only one goal, three goals in this time were enough for three wins, so that the relegation zone could be left again on the twelfth matchday. In the remaining games only one more victory was achieved, but with this 3-0 in the home game on matchday 17 against VB Vágur, B68 Toftir secured the final league, ultimately the team finished seventh.

MB Miðvágur was the first leader with a 3-0 home game against SÍ Sumba. Two defeats and three games without a single goal from the next four games led to the gradual crash. Fourth place was occupied by individual victories on matchday ten, but the lead over ninth place was only two points at this point. The next five games were all lost, after the games on the twelfth day of the game, MB took ninth place, which could not be left, as there was no more victory in the last games. After the penultimate matchday, the relegation was certain. The direct competitor B68 Toftir was able to win the home game against VB Vágur 3-0, while MB Miðvágur lost the away game against TB Tvøroyri with 0-2 and thus could not make up the gap.
