The Faroese Football Championship 1997 was held in the 1st Deild called first Faroese league and was overall the 55th season. It started on April 25, 1997 and ended on October 4, 1997.

Promoted NSÍ Runavík returned to the top division after a year. Champion was B36 Tórshavn , who could win the title for the sixth time. Defending champion GÍ Gøta ended up in third place. However, FS Vágar had to relegate after three years and B71 Sandur after six years of first class.

Compared to the previous season, the goal rate improved to 3.88 per game, which was the highest average since 1976 . HB Tórshavn scored the highest victory with a 9-0 in the away game against B71 Sandur on matchday 13. The game with the highest number of goals was 8-3 between B36 Tórshavn and ÍF Fuglafjørður on matchday five.

mode

In the 1st Deild , each team played twice against each other on 18 match days. The team with the best points at the end of the season was clear as champions of this league, the last team relegated to the 2nd Deild . The ninth placed also had to play two relegation games against the runner-up of the 2nd Deild to stay in the 1st Deild .

Season course

Championship decision

B36 Tórshavn played with them from the start. The first seven games of the season were all won, from the second day of the game on the first place was occupied and not surrendered for the entire season. On the eighth day of the match, B36 suffered their first defeat against their direct pursuer and local rival HB Tórshavn , losing the away game with 0: 1. The gap was halved from six to three points. After eight wins in a row, the next game against HB was lost again, this time with 2: 3. However, the championship was decided on the previous day. The runner-up HB Tórshavn won his game 6: 2 against FS Vágar on matchday 16 . However, since B36 Tórshavn was also able to win his game 2-1 at VB Vágur , B36 was therefore certain ahead of time as champions.

Relegation battle

FS Vágar and B71 Sandur made the last two places among themselves and occupied them consistently from the second match day. B71 Sandur had no win in the first seven games, the eighth game was won 1-0 against FS Vágar. This in turn lost the first ten games of the season and could only celebrate their first win on matchday 13 with a 4-2 home game against ÍF Fuglafjørður . Another success came on the 15th matchday with a 1-0 against VB Vágur, which led to the exchange of places with B71 Sandur, who in turn lost 2-1 to B68 Toftir. It was therefore clear that eighth place could no longer be achieved for both teams. The final decision about the direct relegated team and the relegation participant was made on the last day of the match. FS Vágar played 2-2 at GÍ Gøta and stayed in ninth place as B71 Sandur lost his game 3-6 against B36 Tórshavn. B71 was 4-0 down at the break and was only able to score their own goals in the final quarter of an hour. FS Vágar, however, only conceded the equalizer in the 83rd minute.
