The Faroese Football Championship for women 1997 was held in the 1st Deild called first Faroese league and was the 13th season overall. It started on May 24, 1997 with B68 Toftir's game against Skála ÍF and ended on September 27, 1997.

Promoted B68 Toftir was the 17th participant in the top division. Master was KÍ Klaksvík , who could win the title for the first time. Defending champion B36 Tórshavn finished in third place. On the other hand, SÍ Sumba and B68 Toftir had to relegate after five and one year respectively.

Compared to the previous season, the goal rate improved to 4.80 per game, which was the highest average since the introduction of the 1st Deild in 1985 . The highest victories were achieved by B36 Tórshavn with a 10: 0 in the home game against B68 Toftir on the tenth day and in the away game against SÍ Sumba on the last day. The highest-scoring game completed Skála ÍF and LÍF Leirvík 6: 7 on match day nine.

In the 1st Deild , each team played twice against each other on 14 match days. The team with the best points at the end of the season was clear as champions of this league, the last team relegated to the 2nd Deild . The seventh placed also had to play two relegation games against the first placed in the 2nd Deild to remain in the 1st Deild .

Championship decision

HB Tórshavn remained unbeaten in the first seven games and only gave up points in the 1-1 away game against EB Eiði . On the eighth matchday, however, it set the first defeat by a 1: 4 at KÍ Klaksvík , who in turn had already lost the first leg at HB with 3: 7 on the first matchday. Now both teams were equal on points, the place was swapped on the next match day, as HB only managed a 1: 1 in the derby against B36 Tórshavn , while KÍ celebrated a 2: 1 away win at B68 Toftir . Until the end of the season, both KÍ and HB remained undefeated, with HB affording an additional draw. The championship decision was made on the penultimate match day, when both KÍ Klaksvík won their games 10-1 in the home game against SÍ Sumba and HB Tórshavn 5-1 in the away game against B68 Toftir and the gap of four points could not be made up could.

Relegation battle

SÍ Sumba did not achieve a single victory during the entire season. Until the seventh matchday they were able to avoid the last place, then they swapped places with B68 Toftir, who climbed to seventh place with a 1-1 home game against LÍF Leirvík , but were also still without a win. This changed on the next match day with a 3-0 home win against Skála ÍF , which now slipped to the penultimate place. Their only previous win was on matchday five, when they beat SÍ Sumba 3-1 at home. The three last placed teams all lost the next two games before B68 and SÍ met directly on matchday 11. This duel ended 1: 1. The match between SÍ and Skála on matchday 12 was also a draw. It ended 2-2 just like the away game of B68 Toftir against EB Eiði on this match day. On the penultimate matchday, Skála ÍF was able to overtake B68 Toftir, who were now level on points, with a 4-0 home win against EB Eiði. The 1:10 of SÍ Sumba in the away game against KÍ Klaksvík their relegation was also certain. In the fight for relegation Skála had a goal difference three goals better and the higher number of goals scored. After a 4-0 defeat at HB Tórshavn on the last match day, B68 Toftir had to lose in the away game against LÍF Leirvík. This was also the case due to the 1: 2, so that B68 only took the relegation place because of the fewer goals scored.
