The Faroese Women's Football Championship is played in the top division of Faroese women's football . It was founded in 1985 as 1. Deild ( German 1. League ) and consists of six teams. On December 15, 2017, Betri Banki was presented as the new sponsor, so that the league has been called Betrideildin since the 2018 season . The term is initially valid until 2022.
Below this league is the 1st Deild . In addition to the championship, a trophy has also been played since 1990 .
development
When it was founded in 1985, 13 teams played in two separate groups with a return leg against each other, with GÍ Gøta being represented by a first and a second team. Finally, a final was played between the first two. The following year, four teams from both groups played against each other in one group on a total of 14 match days with a return game, the last two teams had to be relegated. This league size was largely retained until 1997, when a regular relegated team rose to a second division in the first division every season. In 1987, however, only seven teams were represented in the championship. This year there were also no relegated teams, so the normal league size was reached again in the following year. In 1995 the three-point rule was introduced and a triple round with 21 match days was played once, and between 1996 and 1998 there were relegation games between the penultimate of the 1st Deild and the first-placed player of the 2nd Deild , with the Second division was victorious. In 1998 the championship again consisted of only seven teams, in 1999 even only four teams, which was due to several teams withdrawing. To compensate for this, they played against each other four times in 1999. From 2001, with the exception of 2003 and 2006, when ten and eight teams played in the first division, six and seven teams respectively took part in the game, with a group phase of the final round going ahead from 2000 to 2002. In 2001 there was also a one-time relegation game between the last placed in the preliminary round and the third placed in the 2nd Deild . The number of relegated teams from the first division varied from zero to two. Furthermore, from 2005 onwards, every other team was played four times. An exception was again the 2006 season. After the preliminary round with home and away games, the first four teams qualified for the championship round, which was played again with a home and away leg, with the points from the preliminary round halved and rounded up if necessary. The last four teams from the preliminary round played the two relegated teams in the same system, there were no promoted teams.
In 2012 there was the next major reform. The six teams of the previous season were supplemented by the four first place winners of the 2nd Deild , so that a total of ten teams played the championship title.
Current mode
In the Betrideildin , each of the six teams plays four times against each other on 20 match days. The team with the highest points at the end of the season is champions of this league and qualifies for the UEFA Women's Champions League . If there is a tie, a decision will be made based on the goal difference and then on the goals scored. If there is still a tie, a decision game will be played on a neutral seat.
