The Faroese women's football championship in 1996 was held in the first Faroese league called 1. Deild and was the twelfth season overall. It started on June 1, 1996 with KÍ Klaksvík's game against B36 Tórshavn and ended on October 13, 1996.

Promoted LÍF Leirvík returned after ten years in the top division. Champion was B36 Tórshavn, who could win the title for the third time. Defending champion HB Tórshavn ended up in fifth place. However, ÍF Fuglafjørður had to relegate , who withdrew from the game after three years of excellence.

Compared to the previous season, the goal rate worsened to 4.30 per game. The biggest win was achieved by B36 Tórshavn with a 10: 0 in the away game against SÍ Sumba on matchday 12. The highest scoring game completed SÍ Sumba and Skála ÍF with a 2:10 on the tenth match day.

In the first Deild , after the withdrawal of ÍF Fuglafjørður, each team played twice against each other on twelve match days. The team with the best points at the end of the season was the champions of this league. In the newly introduced relegation, the seventh-placed player also had to play two relegation games against the second-placed player in the 2nd Deild to remain in the 1st Deild .

Season course

Skála ÍF won the first three games and thus sat at the top of the table. After the 1: 3 away defeat against LÍF Leirvík , KÍ Klaksvík was in first place, but the lead had to be surrendered the next day because the game against ÍF Fuglafjørður was not counted. The new leaders were again called Skála ÍF and held this position despite the 3: 7 defeat in the away game against HB Tórshavn on matchday eight, but had to give up the lead after the also non-rated game against ÍF on matchday nine to B36 Tórshavn , who were now level on points with KÍ Klaksvík. Now, however, B36 played a game without a rating on the next day, which KÍ could take advantage of and overtook. KÍ also won the next two games, so that the gap to B36 was three points before the last two game days. On the penultimate day of the match KÍ Klaksvík remained free of play, but B36 Tórshavn could not take advantage of it, as they did not get past a 0-0 at LÍF Leirvík. The championship was then decided on the final day of the match. B36 won the home game 2-0 against EB Eiði , with KÍ losing 3-2 at Skála ÍF, so that B36 Tórshavn was the champion.

Since ÍF Fuglafjørður withdrew from the game, the only relegated was determined.
