The Faroese women's football championship in 1989 was held in the first Faroese league called 1. Deild and was the fifth season overall. It started on May 7, 1989 and ended on September 17, 1989.
Promoted Skála ÍF was the 14th participant in the top division. Champion was defending champion HB Tórshavn , who could win the title for the third time. However, NSÍ Runavík had to relegate after two years of first class. NSÍ Runavík stayed here over the entire season without winning a point. Otherwise only GÍ Gøta II ( 1985 ) MB Miðvágur ( 1986 and 1991 ), KÍ Klaksvík ( 1987 ) and Skála ÍF ( 1998 ) remained without a point .
Compared to the previous season, the goal rate improved to 3.88 per game, which was the highest average since 1985. The biggest win was achieved by B36 Tórshavn with a 11-0 home game against NSÍ Runavík on matchday 13. This was together with the 10: 1 between ÍF Fuglafjørður and NSÍ Runavík on the tenth matchday also the highest goal game.

Championship decision
ÍF Fuglafjørður led the table after four games with four wins, closely followed by HB Tórshavn and B36 Tórshavn , who only gave away points on the first day of the match, which ended 2-2. With a 2-0 away win by HB against ÍF on the following match day, B36 took over the lead with a 6-0 away win against GÍ Gøta due to the better goal difference. On the seventh matchday they had to give them up by a 1-1 away game against ÍF Fuglafjørður to HB, who prevailed 6-1 at home against KÍ Klaksvík . HB Tórshavn extended the lead on the following match day with a 2-0 in a direct duel against B36 Tórshavn and also won all remaining games, with B36 losing the next three games and overtaking ÍF. The decision for the championship came after the twelfth matchday by a 6-1 home win by HB Tórshavn against ÍF Fuglafjørður.
Relegation battle
NSÍ Runavík stayed the entire season without a point and was already after the 1: 6 home defeat against HB Tórshavn on the eleventh game day as a relegation, as the gap to seventh-placed GÍ Gøta was already seven points and could not be made up.
