The Faroese Football Championship 1989 was held in the 1st Deild called first Faroese league and was the 47th season overall. It started on April 30, 1989 and ended on September 24, 1989.

Promoted B71 Sandur was the 17th participant in the top division after the introduction of the league game in 1947 , SÍF Sandavágur returned after 41 years in this. Champion became B71 Sandur, who could win the title for the first time and also as the first climber. B71 remained undefeated for the entire season. After the introduction of the 1st Deild, only HB Tórshavn in 1978 and ÍF Fuglafjørður in 1979 were able to do this . Defending champion HB Tórshavn finished in second place. However, ÍF Fuglafjørður had to relegate after two years and LÍF Leirvík after eight years of first class.

Compared to the previous season, the goal rate improved to 3.03 per game. HB Tórshavn scored the highest win in the 7-1 away win against KÍ Klaksvík on matchday six, which was also the highest-scoring game. This was also achieved by B36 Tórshavn and HB Tórshavn with a 5: 3 on the eighth match day and B71 Sandur and HB Tórshavn with a 6: 2 on the last match day.

mode

In the 1st Deild , each team played twice against each other on 18 match days. The team with the best points at the end of the season was the champions of this league, the last two teams were relegated to the 2nd Deild .

Season course

Championship decision

From the first matchday on HB Tórshavn was first at the top of the table, which scored five wins from the first six games in a draw. After a 0: 4 home defeat in the game against VB Vágur , there was a direct duel with the same point pursuer B71 Sandur on matchday eight , which the second-placed won 5: 3 and thus took the lead. Up to this point, B71 had not yet lost a game, and this should not change until the end of the season. On matchday 16, the championship was finally decided when B71 won their home game 4-1 against SÍF Sandavágur and HB did not get beyond a 1-1 at VB Vágur.

Relegation battle

LÍF Leirvík was in the bottom third of the table for the entire season, from the fifth game day onwards the last place was consistently occupied, as the team only got three draws during the season, one of them on the second game day against ÍF Fuglafjørður , which in turn from the eighth Matchday consistently occupied the penultimate place. On the fifth game day they achieved their first victory with a 1-0 home game against KÍ Klaksvík , which temporarily led to the relegation positions being abandoned, with the position up to and including the seventh game day, on which a 2-1 against B36 Tórshavn was the second and last Victory succeeded, could be held. On matchday 15, the relegation of LÍF was certain despite a 0-0 draw at B68 Toftir , as the gap of seven points in the remaining three games could not be made up. On the 17th matchday the second relegation was decided by the 1: 3 home defeat of ÍF against B71 Sandur and the simultaneous 2-1 victory of the direct competitor GÍ Gøta in the away game against SÍF Sandavágur.
