The Faroese Football Championship 1979 was held in the 1st Deild called first Faroese league and was the 37th season overall. It started on April 22, 1979 and ended on September 23, 1979.

Promoted NSÍ Runavík returned after two years in the top division. Champion became ÍF Fuglafjørður , who could win the title for the first time. ÍF remained undefeated for the entire season. After the introduction of the 1st Deild, only HB Tórshavn in 1978 and B71 Sandur in 1989 were able to do this . Defending champion HB Tórshavn finished in third place. However, NSÍ Runavík had to relegate after a year of first class.

Compared to the previous season, the goal rate improved to 3.71 per game, which was the highest average since 1976 . TB Tvøroyri scored the highest win with an 8-1 home game against KÍ Klaksvík on matchday ten, which was also the highest-scoring game.

mode

By increasing to eight teams in the 1st Deild , each team now played twice against each other on 14 match days. The team with the best points at the end of the season was clear as champions of this league, the last team relegated to the 2nd Deild .

Season course

Championship decision

ÍF Fuglafjørður sat unbeaten at the top of the table on matchday four, except for one draw, all games were won up to this point. The lead lasted until the seventh matchday, but after a 0-0 draw at B36 Tórshavn it had to be surrendered to TB Tvøroyri , who had the same point and goal difference , and won their game 5-0 away against NSÍ Runavík were still unbeaten. On the ninth game day, both teams met each other, with ÍF with 3-1 the upper hand and sat back in first place. They did not give up this position until the end of the season and remained unbeaten for the entire season. The final decision was made on the last day of the match. Here ÍF Fuglafjørður defended the lead of one point with a 3-1 home win against B36 Tórshavn, so that TB Tvøroyri's 3-2 home win against NSÍ Runavík was of no use.

Relegation battle

NSÍ Runavík finished last from the third day of the game. The first point was won on the fourth match day by a 1: 1 in the home game against the then seventh VB Vágur . In the further course only three more draws and not a single victory, so that relegation was sealed on the penultimate matchday. Here NSÍ lost 2-1 at home against MB Miðvágur and could not make up the gap of four points.
