society

Nielsen started his career at HB Tórshavn , for which he was only used in the youth team. After his move to BK Frem København in the Viasat Sport Division , Nielsen was taken over by Blackburn Rovers for a "small" but unknown transfer fee on July 2, 2007 after he was able to convince in April at Blackburn in training. Nielsen got a two-year contract with the option of one year extension. In August 2008, the Rovers loaned him to the Scottish first division club Motherwell FC for six months .

In early 2009, Manchester City signed the youth national goalkeeper for two and a half years. From January to April 2009 he was loaned to Wrexham FC , for which he only played five games in the Conference National due to an injury. On April 24, 2010, he made his debut in the Premier League for Manchester City against Arsenal FC as the first Faroese player as a substitute for the injured Shay Given , the game ended 0-0. After Manchester City was allowed to replace Sunderland AFC's Márton Fülöp on loan due to the injury , Nielsen was back on the bench in the next game against Aston Villa .

On July 23, 2010 he moved on loan for half a year to the Tranmere Rovers , for which he played in Football League One . He made his debut on Matchday 1 in a 2-1 home defeat by Oldham Athletic . Due to a shoulder injury, however, he had to take a long break and played his second game for Tranmere in December.

On February 23, 2011, Nielsen apparently broke his leg in the Manchester City game against Bolton Wanderers' reserves . In retrospect, however, this turned out to be torn knee ligaments, whereupon a failure of one year was predicted. At the end of December 2012, Nielsen's contract was terminated. In January 2013 Nielsen was invited to a trial training session lasting several days at the Danish first division club SønderjyskE in Hadersleben .

In early April 2013, the Danish first division side Silkeborg IF signed Nielsen until the end of the season after regular goalkeeper Lasse Heinze was injured. He and his compatriot Christian Holst, who also played for Silkeborg, could not prevent relegation in last place . In July 2013, Nielsen signed a two-year contract with the Scottish first division club FC Motherwell . In April 2015 he left the club for Iceland and played for the reigning champions UMF Stjarnan in the Pepsideild until the end of the season . In the Supercup, cup winners KR Reykjavík were defeated 1-0. At Stjarnan, with whom he finished fourth last season, Nielsen was voted Player of the Year. In October of the same year he signed a contract with the Icelandic master FH Hafnarfjörður . In 2016 he won his first championship title. Valur Reykjavík won the Supercup game 1-0. In 2019 Nielsen lost his regular place to Daði Arnarsson .

European Cup

With FC Motherwell , Nielsen played in the second leg of the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League against FK Kuban Krasnodar in 2013/14 . After the first leg was already lost 2-0, Motherwell lost 1-0 in the second leg and was eliminated. In the second qualifying round for the Champions League , Nielsen played for UMF Stjarnan against Celtic Glasgow in 2015/16 , after a 0: 2 and 1: 4 Celtic reached the next round. With his new club FH Hafnarfjörður , he failed in the second qualifying round for the Champions League against Dundalk FC in 2016/17 after a 2: 2 at home and 1: 1 on a foreign place due to the away goals rule . In the second qualifying round for the 2017/18 Champions League, Víkingur Gøta won 1-1 and 2-0 before they were eliminated from this competition after two 0-1 defeats against NK Maribor . In the playoffs for the Europa League, the team lost 2-1 and 3-2 against Sporting Braga . In 2018/19 FH Hafnarfjörður was qualified for the Europa League. In the first qualifying round, Nielsen and his team won 3-0 and 0-0 against FC Lahti . In the second qualifying round in the away game against Hapoel Haifa , Nielsen and his team were eliminated after a 0-1 home defeat in the second leg.

National team

Nielsen first played in the U-17, U-19 and U-21 national football team of the Faroe Islands. He made his debut for the senior national team on March 22, 2009 in Kópavogur in a 2-1 win in a friendly against Iceland . He replaced the long-time goalkeeper Jákup Mikkelsen , who ended his national team career in 2009. However , Mikkelsen returned to goal in 2010 due to a shoulder injury from Nielsen, which he suffered in the international match against Italy on September 7. Also in 2011 Mikkelsen was appointed to the squad due to Nielsen's renewed injury. Nielsen played the first game after his injury on August 15, 2012.
