The Pepsideild 2016 was the 105th season of the highest Icelandic football league . It began on May 1, 2016 and ended on October 1, 2016 with the 22nd matchday.

The league's twelve teams played against each other in a simple round-trip round, so that each team played 22 games. The last two teams were relegated at the end of the season.
The champions were admitted to qualifying for the 2017/18 Champions League , the second and third placed teams and the cup winners to those for the Europa League .

Compared to the previous year, the composition of the league changed as follows: Leiknir Reykjavík and Keflavík ÍF were relegated to the 1st deild karla (2nd level) as eleventh and twelfth-placed teams in the 2015 season . The local champions UMF Víkingur and the second-placed Þróttur Reykjavík , however, rose to the first division.
