The Icelandic Football Championship in 1940 was the 29th season of the highest Icelandic football league .

Four teams took part in the competition, in which each team met each other once. Valur Reykjavík won the championship for the seventh time, winning seven of the past eleven championships. The reigning record champions Fram Reykjavík finished the championship at the bottom of the table.
