The Icelandic football championship in 1979 was the 68th season of the highest Icelandic football league . The league began on May 12, 1979 and ended with the last games on September 16, 1979.
Ten clubs took part in the championship, which was played in a simple round trip. For the first time since 1955 , five clubs from the capital Reykjavík took part.
ÍB Vestmannaeyja won the championship for the first time.

UEFA Cup playoff
Since the second and third placed team were tied at the end of the regular season, the team eligible to start in the 1980/81 UEFA Cup was determined in a playoff. Due to a draw in the first encounter, the game had to be repeated. Finally, ÍA Akranes prevailed.
