The 1996 Icelandic football championship was the 85th season of Iceland's highest football league . The league began on May 23, 1996 and ended with the last games on September 29, 1996.

Ten teams took part in the competition, which was held in a simple round trip. ÍA Akranes was able to win the 17th title in the club's history, including the fifth in a row. Furthermore, by winning the trophy , Fram won the double for the fourth time in history.
