history
The Kópavogsvöllur was inaugurated on June 7, 1975. At the beginning, the facility had an athletics facility and a very small, uncovered grandstand on the east side. Breiðablik Kópavogur and UMF Víkingur met at the opening . Between 1992 and 2013 the footballers of HK Kópavogur also used the venue before they moved to Kórinn . In 2007 Iceland hosted the European Women's Under-19 Football Championship . The Kópavogsvöllur was one of seven stadiums of the EM and there were two group matches in Kópavogur. Iceland and Denmark (1: 2) and Spain and France (0: 1) met. From 2008 to 2009 the stadium was renovated and the spectator rank was added on the west side. The new grandstand with 1410 covered seats was opened on May 9, 2009 by Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir , the then Minister for Education, Science and Culture. In addition to the changing rooms and other sports equipment, the new building also houses lounge rooms . Today the Kópavogsvöllur is one of the largest football stadiums with an athletics facility in Iceland. The pitch made of natural grass has underfloor heating , but there is no floodlight system. In 2015, the facility was one of the six venues for the U-17 European Women's Football Championship . There were four group games of the tournament in Kópavogsvöllur.
