The Umaghlessi League 2016 was the 28th season of the top Georgian league in men's football . It started on August 7, 2016 and ended on December 11, 2016. The defending champion was Dinamo Tbilisi .

mode

The Georgian Football Association decided on August 3, 2016 to switch the game operations to the calendar year mode. A transition season with 14 teams was therefore played in autumn 2016. The relegated team from last season were not replaced. In 2017, only ten teams will take part in the top division.

The fourteen participating teams were divided into two groups of seven teams each. Each team initially played a total of twelve games in a round-trip round.

The two group winners then contested a championship playoff. The winner will take part in the second qualifying round of the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League as champions . The losing team qualifies for the 1st round of the 2017/18 UEFA Europa League .

The second and third placed played another participant for the Europa League in a playoff round. The two bottom of the table were relegated directly to the Pirveli League. The teams in places five and six played two other relegated teams. The 2017 season will be reduced to ten clubs.
