The A Lyga 2016 was the 27th season of the highest Lithuanian league in men's football . It began on March 2, 2016 and ended on November 26, 2016 with the 5th matchday of the championship round. Defending champion was FK Žalgiris Vilnius .

In contrast to the previous season, the league was played with eight teams. Each team played four times against each other team, twice at home and twice away. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison counted . In contrast to previous seasons, the six best placed champions were decided after five additional rounds, while the seventh placed on the runner-up of 1 Lyga 2016 in a relegation game for promotion.
