The Football Bayern League 1987/88 was the 10th season of the Bavarian Football Association 's Bayernliga as an amateur league . The master of the Bavarian League played similarly to previous years in the promotion round against the champions of the other top leagues for the promotion to the 2. Bundesliga , while the runner-up to participate in the Amateur Championship was justified. From the Bayern League, SpVgg Unterhaching finally qualified for the promotion round in 1988 , in which they only finished third behind FSV Mainz 05 and Viktoria Aschaffenburg and thus missed promotion.

While the championship went to Unterhaching with a 5 point lead, the relegation battle remained exciting until the last day of the match. Due to victories in Kronach and Amberg, SV Heidingsfeld fell back to a relegation place and had to relegate just like SSV Jahn Regensburg , SpVgg Plattling and SC Fürstenfeldbruck . The latter had no chance for the whole season and could only win 3 games.

They were replaced in the following season by the teams of SV Türk Gücü Munich , SpVgg Weiden , TSV Schwaben Augsburg and FC Bayern Hof , who were promoted to the Bayern League. No club was relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga to the Bayernliga, which meant that the number of teams remained at 17 in the following season.
