history

Early Years (1921 to 1979)

VfL Herzlake was founded in 1921 as FC Herzlake . The founders of the association Hermann Lake, August Tieke and Hermann Hüring were close to the local Catholic journeyman's association. The first game in the club's history was lost in Grafeld with 0: 1. In the second game there was a 0:15 defeat in Haselünne , which is the highest defeat for a senior team from VfL Herzlake. After the DJK succeeded in expanding gaming operations to the Emsland in the mid-1920s, FC Herzlake became DJK Grün-Weiß Herzlake in 1927 .

When the National Socialists came to power , the association was dissolved in 1935. In 1946 the company was re-established as VfL Herzlake. The first two decades of VfL history were peaceful. The team shuttled between district league and 2nd district class. In 1966, the seating furniture manufacturer Karl-Heinz Klose took over the management of the association. Three years later, he was promoted to the district class for the first time, before jumping into the district league 8 in 1973.

At the same time, VfL won the Emsland Cup with a 4-2 win over Eintracht Nordhorn . In 1975, they were promoted to the then fifth-class Verbandsliga West , where the team immediately became runner-up behind Falke Steinfeld in 1976 . Under the direction of the former Bundesliga player Eberhard Strauch , VfL qualified for the newly created Landesliga West in 1979 .

In the North German tip (1979 to 1994)

After two fourth places, the Emsländer became runner -up in the 1981/82 state league behind Blau-Weiß Lohne . With a 4-1 win in the playoff against TuS Bodenteich , VfL was promoted to the Lower Saxony Association League . There the club was able to establish itself quickly and in 1984 only just missed the promotion round to the Oberliga Nord . The Wolfenbütteler SV had a goal difference two goals better . A year later, the Herzlaker association league champions were, but failed in the league promotion round because of the goal difference at Wolfenbütteler SV.

In 1987 the Emsländer secured the Lower Saxony Championship for the second time, but failed in the promotion round at 1. SC Norderstedt . A year later it worked in the third attempt with the league promotion. After the renewed Lower Saxony championship, VfL initially failed in the promotion round due to the poor goal difference at TuS Hoisdorf . Then Eintracht Braunschweig made it to the 2nd Bundesliga, so that a play-off between the Herzlakern and VfB Lübeck was scheduled. VfL won 3-1 in neutral Wunstorf .

Despite numerous domestic and foreign reinforcements, the team did not get beyond midfield positions in the first years of the league and temporarily fought against relegation. In 1992, Rainer Persike took over as coach and led his team to the championship. In the following promotion round, the team against Rot-Weiss Essen , Preußen Münster and Eintracht Trier had no chance and was only bottom of the group. The 6500 spectators at the game against Essen provided the largest home game backdrop in the club's history.

Regional league years and retreat (1994 to 2007)

In 1994 VfL qualified for the newly created Regionalliga Nord, where the team only came third behind VfB Lübeck and VfL Osnabrück in the 1994/95 season . In the following years things went downhill in terms of sport, and at the end of 1996 President Klose retired from the club after almost 30 years. As a consequence, the club decided to voluntarily withdraw into a lower division. A group of local business people then took over responsibility for the club, which from 1997 onwards as VfL Hasetal Herzlake and only with young players from the region.

The league was managed despite a meanwhile 1: 9 defeat against the amateurs of Werder Bremen . In the following 1998/99 season, however, the club had to accept a loss of 250,000 marks and rose as the penultimate from the regional league. As a consequence, the club withdrew its team to the 1st district class Emsland . At the same time, the word "Hasetal" was deleted from the club name.

New beginning (since 2007)

In 2007, the club managed to build a powerful team that managed to move up to the Emsland district league in the 2008/09 season. An impressive season ended with 29 wins, 1 draw and a goal difference of 119-23 (+96). In the 2009/10 season, the first team managed to march through to the district league. They won the championship and the district cup with absolute sovereignty (6-0 against Holte in the final in front of almost 1,000 spectators). In 2013 you had to accept relegation to the district league again. In the 2016/17 season, the team was promoted to the district league again.
