Rainer Scholz (born September 3, 1954 in Grunertshofen ) is a former German soccer player and today's coach .

Player career

After his youth in football at FC Bayern Munich and SC Fürstenfeldbruck , Scholz first went to the German armed forces for four years. In 1977 he then signed a contract with the second division Kickers Würzburg . On August 12, 1977, the 2nd game day of the 1977/78 season, he played for the first time in the professional area when he was substituted on at half-time for Lothar Wardanjan . The 2. Bundesliga was uncharted territory for the Kickers, too, and so they had to go back to the third division ( Bayernliga ) after one season . Rainer Scholz got along better with the second division and was on the field in 31 of 38 games. The Upper Bavarian said goodbye to the Würzburger Kickers and moved for the first time beyond the Bavarian border - to Hannover 96 , which means he was retained as a player in the Bundesliga lower house.

96 coach Anton Burghardt used his newcomer in all 38 games. In terms of sport, however, things went less well for Scholz's new employer: 15th place in the final table meant a significant deterioration compared to previous years. Although the sporting situation improved under Burghardt's successors, the club, relegated from the Bundesliga in 1976, did not succeed until Scholz's departure in 1983. Rainer Scholz himself was almost always a regular player over the years and so came to 168 league games for the "Reds", in which he scored ten goals.

The next step in his career followed in the 1983/84 season . The SV Waldhof Mannheim , which has been promoted to the Bundesliga, took the man decker under contract. The now 28-year-old should bring experience to Klaus Schlappner's team , which consisted to a large extent of players from his own youth and / or players who were still before the performance peak. In the first three years after the rise of Mannheim, the defense was a showpiece, as it remained essentially together for many seasons and was well established. In 1984/85 Waldhof had to accept the third fewest goals, in 1985/86 the fourth fewest goals. Rainer Scholz was part of this defense network until 1986. At the latest under the Austrian Felix Latzke , who replaced Schlappner as coach in the summer of 1987, Scholz lost his regular place.

In October 1987 he finally left Waldhof and followed his coach Klaus Schlappner to SV Darmstadt 98 (2nd Bundesliga), who in turn relied on his player Scholz. At the end of the season they were in third place, which is why Scholz faced his ex-club Waldhof Mannheim in the relegation. After a 3-2 home win in the first leg and a 2-1 defeat in the Südweststadion, the Waldhof venue at that time, the playoff was played on a neutral pitch ( Ludwigsparkstadion , Saarbrücken). After it was still 0-0 after extra time, there was a penalty shoot-out in which Scholz converted his penalty, but three teammates did not do the same, so Darmstadt was eliminated.

In the following season Darmstadt found itself at the bottom of the table. So it came about that on November 18, 1988 Rainer Scholz replaced Klaus Schlappner's successor Werner Olk as coach. Together with Uwe Ebert , he led the training and was also a player at Darmstadt. On March 2, 1989 he was replaced by Eckhard Krautzun and thus initially ended his coaching activity. After that he was active as a player of the "Lilien" until 1991. During the 1991/92 season, he suffered an injury so that he could no longer help his team as a player.

Coaching career

At the beginning of 1992 he took over the coaching position for the second time at SV Darmstadt, which was in a relegation battle. He managed to keep the class. The goal for the 1992/93 season was to have a positive point relationship, but things turned out differently: After just one win from the first twelve games, Scholz was released from his duties at the end of August. Even his successors Gernot Lutz and Alexander Mandziara could no longer save the team, Darmstadt finally descended from bottom of the table in the league.

In the following years Rainer Scholz coached amateur clubs. Initially he was employed by SV Neckargerach , where there were cracks between the team and their coach soon after he took office in the summer of 1993. Scholz was officially the team's coach until 1994, but the actual coaching work was most recently done by the assistant coach with a few experienced players. An engagement at SV Mörlenbach followed .

In October 1996, Scholz replaced Lothar Buchmann , who had migrated to SV Darmstadt 98, from VfR Bürstadt and led the Bürstadt team from the regional league to the Hesse upper division . After the end of the season he left the club again.

He then appeared as a regional league coach: from the beginning of the 1997/98 season to November 1997 he was the coach of VfL Herzlake and from May 2000 to the end of the 1999/2000 season he was in charge of training at BV Cloppenburg . He was actually an assistant coach at BVC from October 1999 to September 2001.

He was also the coach of VfB Leimen . For the 2010/11 season he took over TSV Partenstein (district class), and in 2014 SV Weibersbrunn. Scholz has been training ASV Hofstetten since February 2016.
