Olaf Schmäler (born November 10, 1969 in Lüneburg ) is a former German soccer player . He is the twin brother of Bundesliga player Nils Schmäler .

Player career

Schmäler began his career in the youth team of SC Victoria Braunschweig . In the mid-1980s he decided to become a professional player and in 1984 joined the youth team at Eintracht Braunschweig . At that time, Schmäler was also invited to the various youth national teams of the DFB .

In 1988 Schmäler signed his first professional contract with VfB Stuttgart . Until 1992 he was only used sporadically for the Bundesliga club due to various injuries and then moved to SV Waldhof Mannheim in the second division. However, he was not able to assert himself there permanently. In 1995 he moved to VfR Heilbronn . There he ended his active career in 1996.

The greatest success was reaching the final of the 1989 UEFA Cup against SSC Napoli with u. a. Diego Maradona . In the second leg of the final, he even managed to hit a goal, the goal for the 3: 3 final score.

Youth coach

After finishing his playing career, Schmäler worked as a youth coach. First he worked at FV Dudenhofen and then at VfR Speyer . From 2004 to 2007 he worked as a youth coach at 1. FC Kaiserslautern . Today he works as a player advisor at BMS Sportconsulting .
