The 1965/66 season the division Lower Saxony was the 17th season of the highest Lower Saxony amateur league in football . It was the second under the name Landesliga and at that time took the third highest level in the German league system. The amateurs of Hannover 96 became champions . At the promotion round to Regionalliga Nord took the 1. FC Wolfsburg , Leu Braunschweig and TSR Olympia Wilhelmshaven in part. None of the three teams could prevail there.

In the Verbandsliga had blue and white Borssum , Eintracht Osnabrück and Salzgitteraner clubs sports fans and SV Union descend. Instead, Tuspo Holzminden and Germania Wilhelmshaven rose from the Association League . Due to scheduling reasons, the Lower Saxony state league was reduced to 16 teams for the 1966/67 season.

    Decision game against relegation

    The two teams from SV Union Salzgitter tied on points and determined the fourth relegated team in a game on neutral place. The game took place on June 26, 1966 in Peine . Schöningen prevailed 1-0 and stayed in the state league, while Salzgitter had to relegate.
