The season 2019/20 of the Oberliga Niedersachsen was the 73rd season of the football Oberliga Niedersachsen and the twelfth as the fifth-highest division in Germany. It was opened on August 2, 2019 with the game between FT Braunschweig and MTV Wolfenbüttel . From December 9, 2019 to February 8, 2020, the season was interrupted by the winter break, and again on March 13 due to the COVID-19 pandemic , which ultimately led to the cancellation.
For the first time since the 2011/12 season , 18 clubs took part in the game.
Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic
On March 13, 2020, the NFV announced that it would initially cease playing in the Lower Saxony Oberliga until March 23, 2020 inclusive. The DFB then announced the final decision of the 21 regional associations to suspend play from the regional league downwards until further notice.
Based on a resolution of the NFV on May 22, 2020, the 2019/20 season of the Regionalliga Nord was ended prematurely. In addition, it was decided not to carry out a promotion relegation, as was common in previous years, but instead to allow five direct promoters from the four major leagues to participate in the 2020/21 regional league season . In the Lower Saxony Oberliga, only VfV 06 Hildesheim , SV Atlas Delmenhorst , VfL Oldenburg and 1. FC Germania Egestorf / Langreder applied for admission to the regional league on time; Hildesheim and Delmenhorst received approval on June 21st. On an extraordinary NFV association day on June 27, the final decision on the season's evaluation was made. Due to the different number of games played from the league downwards, accounting using a quotient rule (number of points scored divided by number of games played) was used. In addition, there were no relegations to or from the Lower Saxony Oberliga, for the following season the respective quotient winners per season were allowed to rise.
