It began on July 29, 2016 with the game between the second division relegated MSV Duisburg and SC Paderborn 07 (1: 0) and ended on May 20, 2017. From December 19, 2016 to January 26, 2017 it was through the winter break interrupted.

1Since VfR Aalen filed for bankruptcy on February 14, 2017 , the DFB's game committee deducted nine points for the current season on March 10, 2017. After VfR Aalen appealed against this decision, there was an oral hearing in front of the DFB game committee on March 24, 2017, in which it adhered to its original decision. Since an administrative complaint that followed was rejected by the executive committee of the DFB on April 10, 2017, the association filed a complaint with the DFB Federal Court, which confirmed the point deduction in its judgment of May 4, 2017. The final judgment, which was reached on May 18, 2017 after Aalen brought another lawsuit before the last instance, the permanent arbitration tribunal , also confirmed the point deduction.
2The TSV 1860 München - relegated from the 2. Bundesliga sporty for the third league season 2017/18 Qualified - had not submitted documents for the approval for the 3. Liga and had in the League Bavaria relegated. Thus, the SC Paderborn remained in the 3rd league as a sporty relegated table eighteenth.
3On April 24, 2017, the game committee of the DFB deducted nine points for the current season from FSV Frankfurt due to an application for bankruptcy on April 11, 2017. Both the oral hearing before the DFB game committee and the administrative complaint to the DFB executive committee had confirmed this fact. On May 16, 2017, the FSV Frankfurt, which at that time had already been relegated in the event that the withdrawn points were regained, announced that it would waive any further legal remedies against the judgment.
